After the high-profile Yoga Day celebrations on June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the BJP-led government's two flagship urban development programmes with much fanfare this month.
Officials said the PM will launch the Smart Cities Mission and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), unveiling the roadmap for developing 100 smart cities and 500 AMRUT cities over the next five years. The key announcement at the launch, they said, will be the much-awaited decision on which state gets how many smart cities and the coveted central grants. The PM will also announce the guidelines for states to tap into central assistance.
According to urban development ministry officials, the guidelines follow an incentive-based approach to get funds for developing urban infrastructure in cities. There will be an additional 10% performance grant under AMRUT mission for achieving certain laid down conditions. A senior ministry official told ET, "It will be a carrot and stick approach. You can tap into additional grants if you achieve certain criteria."
