Australia’s First Battery Energy Storage Incentive Launched

Australias First Battery Energy Storage Incentive Launched

Adelaide City businesses, residents, schools and community groups have been offered up to $5,000 for installing battery energy storage and up to $5,000 to install solar panels; plus other energy related incentives.

Part of an expanded Sustainable City Incentives Scheme endorsed by Adelaide City Council, the initiative aims to boost investment in solar PV with battery energy storage, energy efficiency and electric vehicle charging stations within the City area.

We are on the cusp of an energy revolution, now, just as we capture and store the rain water that falls on our roofs, we can capture the suns energy and store it until we need it, making continuous availability of carbon-free renewable energy a reality, said Lord Mayor Martin Haese.

Energy storage coupled with renewables is a game changer for the way the world reduces carbon emissions. With more than 27% of South Australian households already having solar PV on their roof, we are perfectly positioned to embrace the next era. I am proud to lead the first Australian government to offer such comprehensive incentives.

Mayor Haese said the Adelaide City community had slashed its carbon emissions by 19% between 2007 and 2013. The Council itself has reduced emissions by 60%, energy use by 10.3% and saved more than $400,000 a year on electricity costs since 2009/10.

From July 1, the Sustainable City Incentives Scheme will offer:

Up to $5,000 for installing solar power systems
Up to $5,000 for installing battery energy storage
Up to $500 per electric vehicle charging station
Up to $5,000 for apartment building energy efficiency upgrades
Up to $1,000 for changing out quartz halogen downlights to LED downlights
Up to $1,000 for solar hot water systems
Up to $500 for rain water tanks

According to Energy Matters, a SunEdison company, a good quality 4kW battery-upgradeable solar power system installed in Adelaides CBD area can return a financial benefit of $1,384 $2,312 a year.

Those eligible for the solar and battery storage incentives can contact SunEdison on 133-SUN  (133 786) to explore options and gain advice on how to make the most of the Sustainable City Incentives Scheme.
