The Tiruchi Regional Engineering College-Science and Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park (TREC-STEP) has been selected as the first ever winner of the unique smart incubator of the year 2016 by India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF).
R. M. P. Jawahar, Executive Director, TREC-STEP, received the award at a function held in New Delhi on Thursday from Reji Kumar Pillai, president, ISGF and chairman, Global Smart Grid Forum.
The award was in recognition of TREC-STEP’s business incubation performance, innovation and societal impact, including its contributions to the power sector.
Promoted as one of the first Technology Business Incubator’s of India in 1986, TREC-STEP is a multi-stakeholder organization, with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Tamil Nadu, Central and State Financial Institutions and by the erstwhile REC, Tiruchi (now NIT-Tiruchi) as the founding members.
In a press release, TREC-STEP said that in the last 25 years, it had proven itself as financially, the most sustainable incubator, with self-generated income to continuously sustain its path-breaking activities towards knowledge based venture promotion and incubation excellence.
So far, TREC-STEP has incubated 214 high-tech start-ups and 2250 micro-enterprises and over 6,000 new jobs had been created.
Apart from this, economic growth of the region had been leveraged with the healthy cumulative turnover.
Almost all the start-ups, in the recent years, had filed patents for protecting their innovative products, according to a press release from TREC-STEP.
