IIIT-A to generate 300kw electricity from solar power

In an attempt to promote green energy, the prestigious Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (IIIT-A) is all set to generate 300kw electricity by installing solar panels on the roof of its boys’ hostel building.

The institute will install a 300kWp rooftop plant connected to the power grid at the boy’s hostel for the mission.

Nearly 940 solar panels and 10 inverters will be installed on the roof of Fifth Boys Hostel of the institute, which will start power generation from May 2017. Excess electricity generated by the plant, if any, will also be made available to the power grid, which can be used by others. The step will help the institute partially meet its own power expenditure, said officiating director of IIIT-A prof GC Nandi.

He said the importance of solar photovoltaic technology is growing worldwide as a credible source of power supply for terrestrial applications. “The mission is in line with the joint initiative of the ministry of new and renewable energy (MNRE) and ministry of HRD to make campuses of technical institutions solar-energy efficient. The plant will make us less dependent on power grid supply and make our own system more reliable. We will use the opportunity to enhance associated teaching and research activities.

“The plant will enable us to reduce electricity bills and the investment will be covered in coming years. This is not just an initiative to save money and reduce our carbon footprint, but also an opportunity to understand how these systems function,” he added.

The power plant would be set up at a cost of around Rs 2,18,70,000 for the 300kWp solar plant. After subsidy of Rs 53,54,820 the net amount payable by the institute will be Rs 1,65,15,180.

The work has been deputed to Fourth Partner Energy Pvt Ltd for designing, supplying, testing and commissioning including warranty, operation and maintenance for the 300kw grid-tied solar power plant for a period of five years. On the behalf of the institute, Anil Bhaduria, assistant engineer visited Pune and Kolkata this week to take stock of solar panels and inverters.
