Delhi heatwave: Power demand at all-time high of 6,361 MW

Delhi is facing an intense heat wave. Temperature on the second consecutive day on Monday remained over 44 degrees Celsius. The peak power demand on Monday rose to an all time high of 6,361 MW, breaching last year’s record of 6,261 MW.

The sweltering heat sent Delhi’s power demand soaring to an all-time high of 6,361 MW at 3.06pm on Monday.

With day temperatures hovering above 44 degree Celsius, the peak demand breached last year’s record. The 6,000 MW-mark was breached for the first time on May 19 last year and then the demand had touched 6,261 MW on June 30 in 2016.

Power utilities officials said the demand this summer has peaked earlier than it did during the previous years. This year, it was on May 16 when the peak power consumption crossed the 6000 MW. The consumption on that day was 6,021 MW recorded at 3.32pm.

Government officials said the demand was on the expected lines and that power utilities are prepared to take maximum load without considerable load shedding.
