World : Rochester praised for work to becoming climate-smart city

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) - The City of Rochester was recognized Friday for its efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building climate resiliency.

Rochester is the first municipality in the Finger Lakes region to receive the certification of being a climate smart community.

The New York State DEC said the city is a leader in the state's efforts to be greener.

"They've gone out in front to not only implement policies, but implementing real projects," said Ken Lynch, Executive Deputy Commissioner of the NYS DEC. "They've taken advantage of state funding, they're really moving the ball forward."

Mayor Lovely Warren was pleased with the designation.

"It's really about a cleaner, greener city; making our city sustainable for our children and for the future of Rochester," Warren said.

The news conference was held, fittingly, on the "Green Roof" of City Hall in Rochester.
