World : The Flemish Government invests in solar mirrors for green heat

In Ostend, Genk and Antwerp there will be three pilot plants with solar mirrors that will produce green heat for businesses in the neighborhood. The installations must be operational by the end of 2019. 

Flemish Energy Minister Bart Tommelein is releasing 819,000 euros for the new solar technology. The principle is simple: the parabolic mirrors can concentrate the sunlight on a heat element containing liquid. That liquid is then converted into heat via a steam generator. The advantage of solar mirrors is that the temperature of the heat that is released is much higher than with a solar water heater. That intense heat is necessary in industrial processes.

Three pilot projects

The company Azteq has been appointed to build the test facilities in Ostend, Antwerp and Genk. The power of each installation is the same, but the green heat will be used in different ways. For example, the company wants to build up expertise and gather data about the heat output, the possible application areas, the integration of existing systems and the location in the area.

In Ostend, the parabolic solar levels are placed in the vicinity of the chemical company Proviron. In Antwerp the port company ADPO from Kallo will use the heat to heat liquids. The third installation is on the grounds of the Thor science park in Genk. They will use the high-quality heat in a test laboratory for Organic Rankine Cycle installations (these are installations that convert (residual) heat from industrial processes into electricity, because the use of organic solvents enables the conversion at a lower pressure and temperature. happen, ed.)and for the heating of buildings connected to a heating network. In total, these three plants will produce heat between 1260 and 1390 megawatt hours per year. The first stone of the installations is being laid this year. By the end of 2019, the three installations should be operational.
