World : ARENA commissions 30-MW energy storage system in Victoria

October 23 (Renewables Now) - The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has officially commissioned today a 30-MW/30-MWh grid scale battery storage system in Victoria state.

The Ballarat Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), currently in the final testing phase, is the first facility of its kind in the state. Owned by AusNet Services and operated by EnergyAustralia, the facility is capable of powering more than 20,000 homes for an hour of critical peak demand before being recharged. It is located at AusNet Services' Ballarat terminal substation.

A consortium led by Downer Spotless completed the battery system with technology provider Fluence serving as a supplier.

ARENA is also funding a 25-MW/50-MWh battery system at the 60-MW Gannawarra solar farm. This project is expected to be ready for the summer. Overall, The two utility-scale batteries got a total of AUD 50 million (USD 35.36m/EUR 30.85m) in financing from ARENA and the Victorian government.
