Norwegian utility Lyse Elnett has picked Swedish mobile communications provider Telenor Connexion for a smart metering solution for 140,000 households.
Under the deal, Telenor Connexion will supply hardware and services including a VPN-solution and access to real-time data for secure communication between Lyse Elnett and the meter.
The deal also gives the utility access to the countrys leading network through Telenor Norway.
Norways first wide-scale rollout will start at the end of 2014 when Lyse begins a 3-year rollout of smart electricity meters to 140,000.
This follows a decision by Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate that all customers in Norway will have access to a smart electricity meter by 1 January, 2019.
Jan Holm, managing director of Lyse Smart, a subsidiary of Lyse, which develops and sells these kinds of solutions under the brand name Smartly, said: This roll-out eliminates parts of the high cost threshold that has characterised the smart home-market.
This will enable customers to easily control lights, heating, alarms, doors and shading from smartphones or tablet devices.
