A smart metering initiative is to be launched by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), in order to give customers move control over power usage and prevent debt. According to reports, a tender for 3 000 smart prepaid meters will be installed in domestic and commercial premises on the island.
In the wake of the 2011 Mari explosion, which disabled the islands largest power station, sinking Cyprus into a costly energy crisis.
The EAC is also suggesting that they are installed in homes that have struggled to pay their bills previously as the prepayment meters make it easier to budget and more difficult to get into debt as energy is paid upfront rather than waiting for a bill.
The EAC has yet to announce further details of the scheme such as which properties will be eligible to apply for a smart meter and whether participation in the initiative will incur any costs for consumers.
