State-run transmission utility PGCIL plans to set up a system to feed electricity generated from offshore wind energy projects to the national electricity grid, a top official said on Tuesday.
The company is in talks with the power ministry in this regard, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) Chairman and Managing Director R N Nayak told reporters in Mumbai. "Integration of electricity generated from renewable energy resources with the grid is our focus area. As part of this initiative, we are working on a mechanism to set up a system to feed electricity generated from offshore wind energy projects to the national grid," he said.
The company plans to develop it on pilot basis, which could either be in Tamil Nadu, Gujarat or Kanyakumari, Nayak said, adding, "It is still being formulated".
The 'Navaratna' company reported a 9.24% rise in net profit at Rs 1,136.51 crore for the three months which ended in June, as against Rs 1,040.34 crore in the year-ago period. Its total income for the quarter stood at Rs 4,075.11 crore as against Rs 3,634.03 crore, registering a 12.13 per cent growth.
PGCIL currently operates more than 1,09,000 circuit km of transmission lines along with 186 sub-stations and transformer capacity of about 2,13,000 MVA (megavolt ampere). "We have taken adequate measures to strengthen inter-state and inter-regional links to enhance the capacity of the national grid," he said.
Presently, the national electricity grid with an inter- regional power transfer capacity of around 40,650 MW has been established, Nayak said. The company is also working on a pilot project to use a 220 KV high temperature superconductor cable system in the grid to ensure better efficiency.
"We have invited global tenders to set up this system in various states in July. We expect work on the project to commence in November," Nayak said.
The company has earmarked a capex (capital expenditure) of Rs 22,450 crore, out of which it has already spent more than Rs 8,500 crore.
PGCIL plans to undertake transmission line projects to transmit 15,000 GW and set up 15 sub-stations of 30,000 MVA capacity.
