Smart water network software and services provider IDModeling has been selected by the City of La Palma, California to deploy its flagship smart water network software, Sedaru. Sedaru will connect organizational data, systems, and people across the water enterprise leveraging IDModeling's hydraulic, asset and operational management analytics so utilities can anticipate water operations, understand impacts and solve problems for energy, quality, water resource and asset management initiatives.

Glendale Water & Power is deploying an innovative residential peak energy savings pilot program designed to help customers reduce usage on hot days when consumer demand for and utility prices of energy are highest. Run by cloud-software provider Opower, this program will provide personalized, low cost recommendations for saving energy on peak days. The program will also help create a more reliable electric grid, by reducing the need for GWP to use additional power.

Siemens Power Technologies International (Siemens PTI) announced the launch of its new consulting service focused on assisting Transmission Owners (TOs) and Operators (TOPs) with study efforts required for compliance of the North American Electric Reliability Corporations Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP) reliability standard, CIP-014-1.

Simoco has implemented a $8.3 million critical communications network for Western Power Distribution in the Midlands, UK. Now fully operational, the Xfin system provides users with higher levels of resilience, redundancy and efficiency. This new implementation follows the successful Private Mobile Radio (PMR) network replacement project with the utilities firm, where Simoco delivered 104 radio sites and 1,500 vehicle installations across the South West and South Wales.

ABB has been awarded a contract by Atlantis Resources Limited to provide the onshore grid connection for Phase I of the MeyGen tidal stream project in Scotlands Pentland Firth. The MeyGen tidal stream project is at the forefront of world marine energy development and will harvest the tidal resources of one of the most energetic maritime sites in Europe, the strait connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea between the Orkney Islands and the Scottish mainland.

Mergers and Acquisitions: Exelon Corporation and Pepco Holdings filed an application seeking approval of their proposed merger with the Maryland Public Service Commission. The companies announced their proposed merger on April 30. The combination of the companies will bring together Exelon's three electric and gas utilities - BGE, ComEd and PECO - and Pepco Holdings' (PHI's) three electric and gas utilities - Atlantic City Electric, Delmarva Power and Pepco.

Awards and Milestones: Newsweek recently acknowledged Iberdrola, the corporate parent of Iberdrola USA, as the most sustainable Spanish utility and the third-most sustainable utility worldwide, according to rankings drawn up by the magazine in collaboration with Corporate Knights Capital. The award sponsors ranked Iberdrola as one of the top three Spanish companies with the most respect for sustainable development and also commended the Company for its efforts to reduce emissions, increase energy efficiency, and improve reporting on environmental progress.

Banyan Water, a technology company specializing in smart water management, reached a company milestone by saving commercial and institutional clients 1.25 billion gallons of water enough to supply 160,000 homes for a month. Since 2011, Banyan Waters clients nationwide reduced their water footprints and operating expenses, even as drought conditions continue to affect a large portion of the United States.
